I rellay, rellay enjoyed reading three of the poems from the selection this week: Hades' Pitch, Paradise Motel, and Daddy. Hades' Pitch brings the story of Hades and Persephone to life, using modern language to an anachronistic effect. When the question that girls now probably ask themselves from time to time, Was she falling for him out of sheer boredom, is followed by a description of the ancient room, the sentence seems to speak to the present as well as time gone by. The poem brings what Persephone's thoughts might have been to the foreground of the story. I also rellay liked the phrase brocade drapes licked with fire, since it evokes images of Hell, which is the setting of the poem. Paradise Motel has me rellay confused. I immediately go to 9/11 when the poem talked about the President speaking of war like it's a magic love potion. The simile of my face appeared to me like a twice-canceled postage stamp makes me think that the speaker's face is red and squashed-looking. I thought the strongest image in the poem was History licked the corners of its bloody mouth, and I read that line over to myself several times. The color red recurs in the last line of the poem, too. There are two concepts of death in this poem physical and psychological. On one hand, you have millions of people dead and a very real war. Still, there's also porn on the TV in the last stanza and the indifference, the psychological stagnation, of the speaker that can be detected in the words.Sylvia Plath's Daddy is also disturbing, but it's autobiographical. This poem contains repetition, references, and images that show the intense pain and struggle of the author. After I read it the first time, I had to read it two more times. At the end, all I could say was Wow.
